Scam calls claiming to be “your IT provider”: what to check

A growing scam targets businesses and home users alike: a caller claims to be from “your IT support company”, knows a little about you, and asks you to install remote access software or read out a code. Here’s how to tell a real support call from a fake one.

What we will never ask you for

Techmec — and any legitimate provider — will never ask for your password, a full credit card number over the phone, an MFA code, or an iTunes/Google Play gift card (yes, really — that last one is always a scam). We also never cold-call about “a virus we detected on your computer”.

The remote access trick

Scammers push you to install tools like AnyDesk or TeamViewer “so we can fix it”. Real support sessions with us start from a ticket you raised, use our named tools, and you can watch everything on screen. If you didn’t contact us first, don’t install anything.

The one-step verification that defeats all of it

Hang up and call back on the number you already have — 1300 832 463 from our website, not a number the caller gives you. A genuine engineer will know your ticket. A scammer’s story falls apart instantly. This single habit defeats essentially every phone-based impersonation scam.

If you already let someone in

Disconnect the machine from the internet, don’t pay anything, change passwords from a different device (bank first, then email), and call us. Fast action usually contains it. Report the scam to Scamwatch — it helps others.

The rule of thumb

Real IT support never minds you hanging up and calling back on the official number. Scammers always do.
