Is it time to replace your office WiFi? Five warning signs

“The internet is slow” is the most common complaint we hear — and about half the time, the NBN is innocent. Here are the five signs the problem is your WiFi hardware, not your provider.

1. It’s fine near the router, terrible elsewhere

Classic coverage problem. One access point can’t push through multiple brick walls or between floors. If a speed test next to the router is 10× faster than the meeting room, you need more access points — not a faster plan.

2. Video calls drop when the office is full

Consumer routers handle 15–25 devices well. A modern office of 15 people easily carries 40+ (laptops, phones, printers, TVs). Past that, the router quietly starts dropping and delaying traffic — which video calls feel first.

3. Restarting the router is a weekly ritual

If a reboot is your fix, the hardware is failing or overwhelmed. Business-grade gear runs for months untouched.

4. Guests are on the same network as your files

This one’s security, not speed: visitors and staff personal phones should live on a separate guest network that can’t see your server, printers or POS. Consumer gear rarely does this properly.

5. Your gear predates WiFi 6

Access points older than ~2020 handle busy environments dramatically worse. WiFi 6/6E was built specifically for many devices at once — the exact office problem.

What a fix looks like

A site survey with heat mapping, then typically 2–4 ceiling-mounted access points with a proper guest network. Most offices are done in a day, from around $1,500 installed.
