Windows 11 24H2: what breaks, and how we fix it

Across the fleets we manage, the 24H2 feature update has been mostly smooth — but a handful of issues keep recurring. If your machines are updating now, here’s what to watch for.

Printers that vanish

The most common ticket. Older printer drivers — especially label printers and multifunction devices on shared queues — can disappear after the update. The fix is usually removing the stale driver package entirely and reinstalling the current one, not just re-adding the printer.

VPN clients that won’t connect

Legacy VPN software using its own network filter drivers can break outright. Updating the VPN client before the Windows update avoids it; afterwards, a clean reinstall of the client resolves it.

The audio bug

Some machines lose sound entirely when a particular USB audio driver conflicts with the update. It looks alarming but the repair is quick — rolling the specific device driver back, then applying the vendor’s updated one.

How we roll updates out for managed clients

We never let a feature update hit a whole fleet at once. A pilot ring of low-risk machines goes first; a week later, if nothing surfaces, the rest follow in waves — with drivers and VPN clients pre-updated. That’s why our managed clients mostly read about these bugs instead of experiencing them.

Before you update

Back up, update your printer/VPN/audio drivers first, and don’t update every machine in the office on the same day.
